Humans have a peculiar relationship with things like mold, worms and microbes. But whether we like it or not, they are all necessary for us to exist on this planet. Fungi particularly, are the basic organisms that help break down matter, so that dead things become building blocks for new living things. I guess that’s why, although I really don’t like it growing on my food, I find mold fascinating.
Dr George McGavin made happen what had subconsciously always been on my mind : what would happen if you could create a room from scratch, and just let everything rot ? You can see what happens in the BBC documentary After Life : The Strange Science of Decay.
